Fables, Folktales, Legends & Myths

  • Stories passed down from generations by oral storytelling.
  • Myths, legends, folk tales, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, tall tales
  • Foundation for fantasy

Classics

  • Timeless stories (relate to a reader of any generation)
  • Lay the foundation for new genres. 

Realistic Fiction

  • Characters: everyday people doing everyday things
  • Setting: modern times, realistic place
  • Plot: realistic events

Historical Fiction

  • Characters: famous historical people
  • Setting: pre 1970, could be historical/important sites
  • Plot: authentic historical events, average or significant peopleScience Fiction
  • Characters: mutants, robots, aliens, “mad”scientist
  • Setting: advanced tech-cities, spaceships, other solar systems, other galaxies,

Fantasy

  • Characters: talking animals, mythical creatures, magic users
  • Setting: often medieval, time travel
  • Plot: hero’s journey, quest, often good vs. evil

Mystery

  • Characters: detective, investigators, spies
  • Setting: could be crime scene, often detective agency, often creepy house
  • Plot: crime or mysterious event + clues = solution

Informational

  • Purpose-provides information on a wide range of topics
  • Nonfiction-science, crafts, sports, articles, social studies
  • Nonfictional informs you on things you want/need to know about

Biography / Autobiography / Memoir

  • Biography (life+write): story of someone's life, written by someone else
  • Autobiography (self+life+write): story of someone’s life written my themselves
  • Memoir (memories): a short account of the authors experiences written by themselves​
